Horticulture is the field of plant cultivation which is done on a much smaller scale as opposed to agriculture but is just as important. This is because horticulture is used to conduct research and study different plants, their growth, their physiology, their cultivation and breeding, crop yield, how to improve their quality and a lot more. While horticulture is something that takes place in the great outdoors, some of it is done indoors. When done indoors, one of the main concerns is that the right amount of sunlight be available to the plants that being grown. Because sometimes sunlight can be an issue, the concept of grow lights especially an LED grow light has becomes a very popular one since that is the easiest way to resolve the problem.

LED lights are, to put it simply, electric devices that look and act like lamps. The light that they give out encourages plants to grow because they emit an electromagnetic spectrum that makes photosynthesis possible. Photosynthesis is a process unique to plants by which all plants turn light energy into chemical energy and store it in the form of sugar. It is an essential process for not only plants but also human beings because a by-product of photosynthesis is oxygen.

This in turn enunciates the importance of LED lights when it comes to growing plants indoors or as a part of horticulture. What makes grow lights special as opposed to any ordinary lights is that its emitted light spectrum is a lot like the one that the sun radiates, with the color temperature being similar as well. The advantage of grow lights obviously is that the light spectra can be varied according to the type of use that you need it for. For example, if you are using grow lights for that stage of plant growth where the plant is beginning to flower, then the shade of light that will used on the plants will usually be a red one, or a reddish-orange one. There are many different types of grow lights that are available on the market today, all with different prices. An LED grow light is one that is most favored by horticulturalists but many other kinds of grow lights are used extensively as well. The high pressure sodium lamp is another popular variety.

The high pressure sodium lamp is basically a high pressure discharge lamp which uses sodium to produce light via a very high pressure. The biggest advantage of using high pressure sodium lamps where the field of horticulture is concerned is that they really encourage and enhance the flowering and fruiting phase of plant growth. The disadvantage of using these high pressure sodium lamps however is that they not only produce pale looking plants, although they are quite healthy, but the plants usually turn out quite long and thin with a lot of intermodal length. On the other hand they have a very long life and are very efficient in almost every way, including where energy usage is related.
